about

Grass Roots is a really fun song to play, I really enjoy the walking base line that accompanies the end of each line of the verse.

The idea I wanted to describe with the lyrics is this journey we all make from childhood, growing ever older and how some memories fade with time. These are replaced with newer worries and desires. The last verse really brings this home for me and, when I play the song, I often catch myself thinking about older family members who have since passed on. It reminds me not to forget them.

I wanted to merge this concept with a childhood memory; this image of sitting in a field, idly tearing up clumps of grass, looking at and thinking about the wider world. Its  something that I distinctly remember doing when I was little.

Instrumentation:
Lead vocal, acoustic guitar, bass, electric guitar, harmonica, piano, shruti box, backing vocals

Inspirations:
Frank Turner - Losing days
Northcote - Hope is made of steel
Murder by death - I have arrived

lyrics

You scraped your knees when you were young
Ran with wolves untamed and free
Chased all dreams ripe for taking
Now your aged body breaking

As we soldier on these days
wearing the soles out of our old boots
Remember those visions of our youth
tear out the green grass shoots
Feel it now, much has changed
can you grasp the truth
Dig it up from beneath the ground
those torn grass roots

You risked your heart to keep it alive
Trailing smoke from fires far behind
Through your memories you’d go roaming
For peace of mind, vainly hoping

As we soldier on these days
wearing the soles out of our old boots
Remember those rhythms of our youth
tear out the green grass shoots
Feel it now, much has changed
can you grasp the truth
Dig it up from beneath the ground
those torn grass roots

Your old haunts are all but gone
Replaced by modern wills and wants
All grow old with time, constantly fading
We waste our days just not noticing

As we soldier on these days
wearing the soles out of our old boots
Remember those rhythms of our youth
tear out the green grass shoots
Feel it now, so much has changed
can you grasp the truth
Dig it up, those torn grass roots

As we soldier on these days
wearing the soles out of our old boots
Remember those visions of our youth
tear out the green grass shoots
Dig it up
Dig it up
Dig it up from beneath the ground
Those torn grass roots
